An Interview with Carly Kimberley

If you’re living anywhere near Madison, WI, you’re lucky enough to have the talented Carly Kimberley of Carly Nicole Photography close enough to take your photo. Carly’s work captures her subjects in a style that is simultaneously genuine and striking. Her photos speak for themselves, but let’s learn a bit more about the woman behind the lens. In her own words, here’s Carly…

MilspoFAN: Tell us a little about yourself, your journey as a military spouse, and where you are today.

Carly: I’m Carly, a lifestyle & film inspired portrait photographer. I started my business Carly Nicole Photography a couple of years ago. I am from the Madison, WI area. I have photographed mostly military families. I studied photography and graphic design at Edgewood College in Madison, WI, as well as during my year abroad in England.

Little did I know when I met Nathan that I would become a military spouse and move all over the country and world! I’ve learned military life is an adventure and sacrifice in many aspects.

My college sweetheart and fiancé, Nathan, is an F-16 fighter pilot in the Air Force. He has been in the Air Force for 4.5 years and went to the United States Air Force Academy before that. We just finished up his F-16 B-Course training at Holloman AFB, prior to that we were at Sheppard AFB for ENJJPT. Somehow, when we rolled the dice for the next assignment we were able to get our top pick on the assignment list, Truax Field in Madison, WI. We are so happy to be back in Madison, WI for the next few years, where we met in 2014 in college, and also where we both grew up, until our next move.

MilspoFAN: How has your role as a military spouse impacted your work as a photographer- creatively, logistically, or otherwise?

Carly: Being a military spouse has taught me to continue to evolve and always be flexible in my career choices. My photography business allows me to pick up and move whenever needed and wherever the Air Force sends us in the future! I decided to begin working on starting up my own photography business to alleviate the stress and problem of finding a new job every 3 years until further notice. I appreciate not having a desk job more than ever. I can continue my career with confidence and the flexibility that is much needed to support our Air Force lifestyle.

I specifically photograph primarily families and couples due to the community we are in. My clients mostly find me via the Air Force community by word of mouth! I adore documenting authentic moments between military families and couples in love. I have also loved photographing squadron photo day! The community has impacted my work by giving me an amazing base of clients and truly connecting with them on the common ground of being in the Air Force.

MilspoFAN: What’s next for you?

Carly: I really look forward to growing my business in Madison, we just arrived this month so there’s so much to look forward to! Since we are at a guard base, things may change for my business, I also hope to expand my photography services and take advantage of what the city offers while we are here. Enjoying the fresh start that PCSing gives is the best!

MilspoFAN: How would you describe your photographic aesthetic or style? How has your work evolved over time? Do you have any favorite subjects?

Carly: The lifestyle photography approach I take is timeless, candid and authentic, focusing on capturing the story. Romantic, light and airy photographs are my favorite look. My style is always bespoke – tailored to be all about the client. I want my clients to swoon over their photographs for years to come!

Thank you, Carly, for sharing your story and your work with us!
