Catching up with Nerissa Alford
Since my last update, our family has started putting down roots in the DC area. Both of my sons are driving and in college. My husband has since retired from active duty and started life as a civilian. We currently live in northern Virginia in a city setting, which has been different from living on Air Force bases outside of metropolitan areas. I’ve found my exploring spirit again and have enjoyed walks with my dog.
I was busy taking care of my family and put my personal/professional goals on hold. During this time, I kept making art on the go - on my iPad and with a travel watercolor kit I made.
The only goal I had was to apply for Dog Tag Bakery’s fellowship program. In December of 2023, I was selected and offered a spot in the Washington DC cohort. (For any of you interested in entrepreneurship, I can’t recommend the Dog Tag Fellowship enough. Sign up for their emails or feel free to reach out to me. I’d be happy to chat.)
January 2024 I moved to northern Virginia and the following week I started the fellowship. I was in school for the first time in 30 years. I lacked the business acumen - I got that and so much more. A few of the classes I took with Georgetown University’s Continuing Education include: Entrepreneurship, Business Accounting and Communication. I left with a business plan, budget and my first pitch under my belt. I have never been so clear about the path I want to pursue. I am so much more comfortable with public speaking after the many projects I presented. The extra was that our cohort was so close; I have friends for life.
What’s in my future?
I am excited to look for a creative job. There are so many opportunities in the DC area. I may finally get that dream job. I will pursue my small business dream next year after so many years of living aboard and 4 SOFA regulations. I plan to start teaching art classes a few times a month.
I am passionate about making art accessible, using traditional art supplies unexpectedly, and recycling everyday items. My art celebrates local communities and global cultures through creating accessible arts. If you PSC or visit the DC area, look me up. I am always up for an artist's day or field trip around town.
